Hints on Organising a Running Event

Whether you are an avid sprinter or just an enterprising person who likes to cash in on the lucrative pursuit of holding recreational physical activities for the public to take part in and enjoy, it takes a good amount of planning and coordination to make racing affairs successful.

In organising running events, you will need to prepare at least six months in advance. Form a committee which can assist you in carrying out the necessary tasks such as contacting sponsors, getting permits, preparing the materials needed and overseeing the financials.

Choose a good outdoor location for your race. An ideal one for a fun run, for example, would be a route that is mostly flat and features lovely views or enables participants to pass by places of interest or landmarks. Have a certified group measure the distances to ensure that the path is indeed of the right length. In addition, opt to hold the event on a weekend so that the turnout will be satisfactory.

Be mindful of the weather. Schedule the recreational affair during the months where precipitation or adverse conditions are less likely to occur.

Make sure that you provide enough water stations along the route so that the runners will be able to keep themselves sufficiently hydrated. You can space them about one to 1.5 kilometres apart. For longer distances, you can provide wet sponges for the participants which they can use to cool themselves down as they continue towards the finish line.

Minimise the chances of the striders developing injuries, especially in fun runs. Include an engaging and energy-boosting pre-race warm-up session in your programme. Get a competent instructor or physical health professional to demonstrate the proper moves and stretches that suitably prepare the body for the heart-pumping activity that is to follow. Also, have a first-aid team on board and plan for an efficient system of identifying, assisting and treating runners afflicted by sprains, cramps, injuries and exhaustion.
